The Pantone Institute has broken tradition. Instead of naming a single color of the year, it has named two colors of the year – Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow. Both colors connote a feeling of strength and hope, according to Pantone. There are good reasons why the Institute selected these two colors because they offer the promise of something happy and friendly according to Pantone.
“We need to feel that everything is going to be better, it is something essential for the human soul. In a context in which people seek to strengthen themselves with energy, clarity and hope to overcome a situation of sustained uncertainty, encouraging and full of life tones satisfy our search for vitality,”
Pantone explained
The Pantone color of the year historically trends in fashion and beauty and furniture, design, and décor items. Pantone selects the year’s color based on an in-depth study of trends and market analysis of the entertainment industry, art, fashion, popular tourist destinations, and all areas of design. This year, Pantone also considered the general mood of the world population.
Colors of the Year
Pantone’s 2020 color last year was Classic Blue which according to Pantone, “Instills calm, confidence and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” They of course had no idea what we would be facing in 2020.
Sherwin-Williams 2021 color of the year is Urbane Bronze, an earth-toned shade that provides the look and feel of mindful reflection and renewal.
The PPG 2021 color palette of the year is a trio of colors dubbed Be Well. The choices include Transcend, a mid-tone oatmeal-colored hue that draws on earthy influences and nostalgia; BigCypress, a shaded ginger with persimmon undertones and MistyAqua, a watercolor cerulean blue. According to PPG, the colors are designed to evoke feelings of compassion and comfort to address family and societal needs.
