Why not just hire an interior designer?
Design is broken into different categories. Some of them are form and rhythm, function, space, color, all the different elements that you need to keep in mind when you’re putting a room together, not just as a decorator, but also as an interior designer or as a kitchen and bath designer. At JM Kitchen and Bath, our designers practice much like interior designers.
How does the designer handle the process?
We work with architects, contractors, structural engineers, whatever’s needed to do the project in your home. So what makes a good designer is knowing that you’re being listened to, knowing that somebody’s really hearing what you say as well as what you didn’t say, making you feel comfortable so that you can give your thoughts and ideas about what your home means to you and what you want it to become. You want somebody who can think quickly on their feet.
How does a JM designer handle unexpected situations?
When wood doesn’t bend and you’re putting a kitchen together of wood boxes, you get a call from a contractor that says, Julie, you’ve got to be ready to think in 20 minutes, 20 seconds, just think of a new idea, think of a new plan and move forward with it so that your project isn’t put on a longer timeline. It’s important to be able to say to somebody, your trust is in me. If that’s the case, you have to be okay with me being honest with you.
Will a designer point out any missteps?
I love that you have these ideas and thoughts about your space, but what if I’m to tell you when I walk into your home that those colors are really not the best for your atmosphere. That product is not as durable as maybe you and your three children might need in the next 10 years. All of those things, that’s my job.
What appliances can I get through JM?
At J.M. Kitchen and Bath Design, we carry a variety of high-end appliance lines such as Sub-Zero, Wolf, Cove, Viking, and Best Hoods. The advantage of getting high-end appliances here at J.M. Kitchen and Bath Design is that we can help direct you to the different options we have for types of appliances, whether it be induction, gas, dual fuel, do you want paneled appliances, just those different configurations and different options that you have that would work with the design that we’re doing for your kitchen. Working with a designer here at J.M. Kitchen and Bath, we can help you with the different options that you have for appliances.
Is going high end worth the upfront expense?
I know people who’ve had their refrigerators for 20 plus years. Most appliances will not last 20 years unless you’re in the high-end options. Adding high-end appliances to your kitchen design kind of is the icing on the cake.
As far as, you know, you’re putting a lot of money into your kitchen design and what you’re paying for it, that you need to have the appliances that match that. So you don’t want to skimp on an appliance when you’re putting in, you know, beautiful custom cabinetry. JM Kitchen & Bath Design is a little bit unique as far as the design industry goes.
What should I know about the first steps of a JM remodel?
You’ve come into JM Kitchen and Bath. This is your first step. You’ve never done a kitchen before. You come in for a no-cost consultation. We’re going to have you in. We’re going to show you the different products that we offer.
What should I expect in the consultation?
We’re going to give you an idea of our process from initial design, through all the changes, through delivery, through installation of the project. At that point, we’re going to give you some ideas of what the budget could be and talk through any obstacles that are going to come up through the process. If you decide you do want to move forward with us, we do ask for a retainer that’s going to hire us as your designer to make sure we’re going down the same road together. That does go towards the purchase of the cabinets or the project. And then at that point, we’re going to do full drawings, 3D views, elevations, perspectives. We’ll have product meetings, product selections, all the different things that go into a kitchen.
How do I decide on my budget?
A lot of customers come in not knowing what their budgets are, and that’s okay. What the NKBA guidelines recommend is 10 to 20 percent of the value of the home. Average kitchen designs that we work on range anywhere from 50 to 80 thousand dollars, some being more, some being less but that’s why we’re here as the experts, is to help you establish your budget. You come in, you bring in some basic measurements and pictures. We can go through the different products that are offered, and we’ll sit down with you to try to figure out approximately what those are going to cost and what percentage of the overall budget that’s going to take up.
How should I prioritize certain things to stay on budget?
When you are looking at your budget, the overall budget, it is going to be broken out into different portions. Cabinets and appliances tend to be the bigger portions of those budgets. That is something to keep in mind, but we’re going to find out what’s important to you. For some people, just the visual aspect of their kitchen design might be the best part of it, so maybe the brand doesn’t matter necessarily. You can get a less expensive brand that fits your needs just fine, whereas maybe you need a better cabinet or the custom or right color that would drive us into a more custom line, something that’s a little more expensive
What can I remodel with JM?
Here at JM we can do pretty much any remodel that you want to do. If you want to move walls, a kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel. We’re looking for contractors who are experts in their field. They can install cabinetry, flooring, and countertops. We work with fabricators. Your designer will be working with the contractor from start to finish and we’ll really be making sure that everything is installed correctly. And you also get a one-year warranty on the labor that you purchase through JM.
Who is doing the actual installation?
So one thing that sets JM apart from the rest is our installation teams. We really vet them. We’re looking for people who are insured and licensed. One of the other important things about the installation team is reliability. Especially with cabinetry, there’s a lot of finessing that you have to do to make it look perfect. So you really need someone who’s very dedicated to their craft and can see the details in the project and make sure everything is finished to the highest quality. One thing that’s unique here at JM is we can handpick your installation team based on your project needs, even who we think you will get along with. We understand that these are people that are in your house for weeks on end, and we want to make sure everything goes smoothly.
What is the biggest reason to not go through a big box store?
You get the difference between someone with a doctorate in kitchen design versus someone that is just getting into it at the beginning but we also have relationships with all the trades that go around that pull up the parts that we don’t do. We have great consistent contractors, designers, plumbers, electricians, everybody that we need to make this job come together. One of the things that sets us apart from other places is they will throw a lowball offer at you to get you hooked in to go down their trail. We like to give you realistic numbers that we expect it to be.
What other remodeling can I do at JM?
At JM Kitchen and Bath, we do far more than just kitchens and bathrooms. We also do theater rooms, we do simple offices, we can also do more elaborate offices, libraries. In addition, we also do a lot of mud rooms, laundry rooms, pretty much any room that would need some built-in cabinetry. Some of the more elaborate projects I’ve done have been some custom closets. I’ve also done some custom theater rooms that were coordinated with a basement bar. I’ve also done wine rooms in addition to the simple bars.
Why not just reface my current cabinets and save money?
Here at JM Kitchen and Bath, people come in all the time, they want to remodel, but they’re not sure they want to spend the money that’s required to do that. So they think that they can save money by just refacing the cabinets or repainting but most of the time people decide differently because the cabinets are old, they don’t work as well. Their layout is not right, it doesn’t work with the appliances that they have. And so we usually guide them to new cabinets and they can get it done for less than what a lot of the companies that offer refacing will do on that. And so we give you a better final product that works with dovetail drawers, soft clothes.
How do we tackle the plumbing in my new kitchen or bath?
Here at JM Kitchen and Bath Design, we do have a variety of plumbing products that we offer. Whether it is a farmhouse sink, under-mount sink for your kitchen, or any of the new bathroom faucets and fixtures needed. We also have valued partner showrooms that we have for our trade that when we take you out and do product selections, we will actually go with you and take you to a plumbing showroom where we can go around and look at all the different offerings and really help you determine what’s best for your product. At JM Kitchen and Bath Design, we also offer design services for bathrooms as well. And sometimes with part of that, you come into any of the showrooms, we talk about a variety of all the different plumbing fixtures that you may need for your project, especially when we’re talking bathrooms.
There are so many lighting options, how does my designer help?
As part of the design services here at JM Kitchen and Bath Design, we do help you do product selections in all facets. Lighting being one of the elements, especially in a kitchen or a bathroom area, can really set off and be a little bit of the jewelry for the space. We do have lighting design showrooms that are vendor trade partners of ours. We will go on almost a field trip day, a shopping day with you, and go look at the different trades, see what we can find in their showroom, whether it be bathroom sconces, chandeliers, lighting for the dining area. But we can really see everything that is offered and have such a variety to find that piece that’s just perfect for your project. At JM Kitchen and Bath Design, we like to think of your project as a whole.
